Is it worthwhile to target social media users?

On August, 14, 2011, Forbes released a blog article about the value of heavy social media users. The story by Nick Tabbal was titled “How Valuable Are Heavy Social Media Users, Anyway?”.

The article divides social media users into three distinct segments. The segments are based on online time spent on social media. Social media time for heavy, medium and light user segments was 26%, 4.1% and 0.42% respectively.

Problems with unlimited choice

On July, 31, 2011, Mashable published an article about social media overload opportunities for startups. The story by Nova Spivack was titled “Sharepocalypse Now: Why Social Media Overload Means New Opportunities for Startups”.

The article predicts that competition will increase as different social media outlets attempt differentiation. More choices create confusion among users.

Problems with quitting social media

On August, 02, 2011, TechEye published a story concerning the difficulty of deleting Facebook. The article by Rebecca Backer was titled “Facebook’s grip on all of your data – exposed”.

The story reminded me of another social media service known as “Hot or Not”. I signed up for “Hot or Not” about ten years ago. I decided to delete my account after being a member for less than one year.

Important lessons for social contracts

On June 23, 2011, Tyler Winklevoss, Cameron Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra filed a suit against Facebook. The status report was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. The filing is ConnectU Inc et al v. Facebook Inc et al, U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts, No. 07-10593. The court’s information cab be obtained at “U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts”.

The Winklevoss brothers and their partner Narendra allege that Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg withheld key information during settlement proceedings.
